The Philippine Baking Industry is beginning to embrace innovation as a tool for growth. The Department of Science and Technology through the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) helps micro, small, and medium enterprises to acquire the upgrading it needs.
Here are some firm-beneficiaries under SETUP
Cakeboom Cakes and Pastries
Cakeboom Cakes and Pastries started its operations in 1998 by selling on the streets of Bukidnon. Its most popular products are Piñasitas and Piñakasi. Cakeboom manufactured these products manually that hindered them to intensify production and improve on product quality. SETUP provided the firm the seed money amounting to Php 230,000. The assistance provided for a mechanized equipment for the processing of flour, an innovative baking equipment, a packaging equipment, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) on-site assessment. With the acquired technologies and assessment, the firm increased sales by 85% and increased productivity by 52%.
Ong’s Bakery and Ice Cream House
Managed by Mrs. Celia G. Ong, Ong’s Bakery and Ice Cream house was first established in Agusan del Sur in 1985. Due to lack of appropriate and outmoded equipment, the firm is unable to produce quality bakery products. Through SETUP assistance amounting to Php 304,750, the firm acquired high capacity processing equipment and has also undergone productivity consultancy through the Manufacturing Productivity Extension (MPEX) program. As a result, Ong’s Bakery was able to increase net profit by 20%.
Aunt Ludi Bakeshoppe
Aunt Ludi Bakeshoppe is popular in the local industry for introducing innovative products such as its healthy bread line and specialty loaf bread. But due to lack of proper equipment, the firm cannot meet customer demands. Through DOST-SETUP financial assistance amounting to Php 1.984 million, the firm acquired additional bakery machinery and equipment such as rack oven, divider/rounder, dough moulder, sheeter, etc. It also underwent seminar workshop on understanding nutrition label, packaging and labeling, Food Safety, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP).
